How long have you been a client of JUMP START?

Since February 2001, although it doesn’t seem that long!

Why did you originally start?

I was swimming 3 times a week but not doing any weight-bearing exercise. I was hearing a lot about prevention of osteoporosis and the importance of maintaining muscle mass for women approaching menopause, and I knew I did not have the self discipline or the knowledge to devise an appropriate exercise regime. I’d had enough of gyms – it really appealed to me that Jump Start used the parks around my home.

What do you enjoy best about JUMP START?

The friendly staff, the availability of a wealth of expertise in the trainers, the outdoor training, and the fact that I now have a whole community of friends I didn’t have before. I had lived in Cammeray for over 10 years and only knew the people in my street, but after a while at Jump Start I came to know lots of people from all over Cammeray, Neutral Bay and Cremorne.

What goals have you achieved?

My weight has never changed but my body shape has changed considerably; I carry much less body fat (22cm less!), I am stronger and more flexible. I went back to running after a 10 year absence and didn’t think I could get below 6 min/km. Now I am doing 5minute 30 secs/km and running half marathons in relative comfort. My diet has also changed – I don’t consume any dairy and I don’t miss it at all.

What types of sessions do you participate in?

Boxing, running club, a group session on Saturdays with Bec, 5 Vanuatu Round Island Relays, 3 Vitality Challenges, and numerous social activities.

Is there anything in particular that has helped you reach your goals?

The trainers have been fantastic – they have always been encouraging and positive. They have pushed me to train harder without exceeding safe limits and they pay close attention to technique. Most of all, it is the long term, regular exercise that has made the difference – the first 2 years were demanding but now it is such a part of my life, I cannot do without it.

What are your goals for the future?

I would like to continue to run and improve my pace down to 5minute 15secs/kilometre. I want to keep on track with maintaining and improving muscle strength and flexibility.

Any advice for people thinking of starting a health and fitness program?

Don’t think about it, just do it! You have to accept that change may not happen quickly, and that there will be plateaus in your fitness level from time to time, but you will definitely get results if you integrate regular exercise into your life. It should be the absolute last thing you forego in your daily schedule, not the first.
