"Hi you must be Gregor, I'm Meggan"... it was one of those mystical voices, smooth like honey and as comforting as chocolate.

I really only wanted to start Yoga, to gain some extra suppleness in my tight hamstrings, but ever since that first class where Meggan's voice had enfolded me and the morning Sun brushed my closed eyelids, I knew that I would be gaining more.

You know how it is. You labour in what is supposedly a nine to five job, and outside that you want time for yourself to relax and chill. The easiest place to escape is in front of the TV or reading a book. However, no matter how much 'chilling' and 'relaxing' you do, that nine to five remains the same unending list of tasks, meetings and negotiations. What if you could alter the 'nine to fives' in our lives?

Well, I won't lie to you and say that my job has become as chilled and relaxed as sitting on the sofa, but it definitely has changed. A new sense of awareness has come to my work day, in which I can see when I am just spinning wheels. Now, rather than getting worked up when things aren't progressing as I wish, I am better able to see what is within my power to fix now, and what is out of my hands.

Spending those 60 minutes each week, stretching, focussing on my breath, widening my awareness has given me many more hours in the week. Meggan's classes are not what you might expect. It is not about tying ourselves in knots, they involve poses chosen to be challenging enough for us to experience ... US.  I truly recommend that you join us on Friday mornings at Jump Start.
Gregor E, IT Consultant for IBM.

Do I need yoga experience?

No, not all. If you can breathe, you can do yoga!

Are the sessions tailored for beginners, intermediate or advanced clients?

Sessions will be suitable for all levels. Options will be given wherever possible to make the poses easier for beginners or those less fit/flexible, or harder for more experienced people. feel free to communicate with the tacher at any time if you need help with a pose.

What if I have NO flexibility?

Then that's a great starting point! By using gentle yoga poses, the breath, and the right mind-set, little by little flexibility will definitely improve. However, remember that yoga is not just about physical flexibility. Yoga is also about learning to be with what is; when the mind becomes flexible so does the body.

“I joined Jump Start's friday morning program in february and have never looked back! In our increasingly hectic lifestyles, early morning yoga is a perfect way to start the day.  It stills the mind allowing you to better focus on your day ahead.  From a physical perspective, your body receives a great stretch which helps release built up tension. As a busy executive, this has been very helpful for me to cope with day-to-day stress.   I highly recommend yoga to everyone, try it and experience the difference it makes”. Leanne C. Commercial Business Operations Director, Asia Pacific & Japan | APC-MGE

What do I need to bring?

  • Water - although it is best not to drink whilst you are doing yoga, bring some water with you for after the class.
  • A yoga/pilates mat
  • A towel/sarong or jumper is handy to pop over the body during the final relaxation, as the body cools down.

What do I need to wear?

Comfortable clothes that you can move in. Wearing layers is a good idea. You'll be practicing with bare feet.

What type of yoga will we be doing?

Hatha. Classes will have a medium intensity level, with options to step it up or down. You'll always start with a gentle warm up, including working with the breath, then move through a sequence designed to stretch, as well as strengthen the whole body, and relax the mind. You will finish with a short relaxation exercise, great for easing stress and tension. There may also be some basic mediation and breathing techniques, which again is great for helping with stress. You can be assured that the classes will be fun too, and will often include some partner work. Your individual needs will be met throughout the class, so always make sure you tell the teacher if you have any problems or injuries before you get started. In order for your individual needs to be met, always make sure you tell the teacher if you have any new problems or injuries before you get started.

"Jump Start's friday morning classes have really helped develop my muscle tone and flexibility.  This class also provides great relief for the muscle tightness that I build up over the course of each week from sitting in front of a computer at work.  I leave the class energised, relaxed and focused - a great start to my fridays and the weekend with my family!" Suzy A, Corporate Manager, Mother of 2

Should I eat before or after the class?

Yoga is best done on an empty tummy, that's why the mornings are perfect for practice. An empty tummy makes it easier and more comfortable to move through the postures. Ideally you should allow 4 hours from your last big meal and 2 hours from a snack. But if you must eat just before class, then a small piece of fruit or juice is OK. It's also best to have gone to the toilet before practice. Eating after class is fine, and drinking freshly squeezed juice and water is especially good after yoga.

How many in the class?

Class size will be restricted to 12, to ensure individual attention. So get in quick before all the spots go!

What is the cost ?

$24 per session

What if it rains?

During the summer months we are outdoors, so if it rains we go to our indoor venue, which is whatused to be the Occasional Child Care Centre, Carter St, Cammeray (underneath the All Saints Anglican Church). You will receive an SMS message at 6am if the class is to be re-located.

What if I am pregnant?

This is not a pregnancy course. Please contact us for places that specialise in pregnancy and yoga.

What if I miss a week?

Just like any course you do through a College or TAFE, you are paying for the total course, not week to week. So if you miss a week, then you miss a week!

“Juggling all the challenges of small business can be exhausting and draining, and by Friday I certainly feel this strain. Yet still, every week I get surprised how calm and alive I feel after Meggan’s wonderful yoga class. It really has helped me to feel rejuvenated, even when I have had such a stressful, full-on week. My body also feels longer with no knots, and I can feel myself walking taller. There is no doubt that I have found ‘stilling my mind’  very challenging because when it is time for our meditation/relaxation part at the end of the class my mind automatically starts thinking about my ‘to do’ list. Each week though this is improving and it is such a wonderful achievement when I get to sit still and have my mind still at the same time. Meggan is so patient and gives such wonderful guidance throughout this process (and on life in general), and I find myself looking forward to this hour every week.”
