Help us help the children

Vanuatu Round Island Relay

As you know, our ‘Vanuatu Round Island Relay’ trip is fast approaching, and while the Jump Start team is busy pounding the pavements to get ourselves fit enough for this unique event, we are also working very hard behind the scenes to raise enough money for our fund-raising project.

This year, we are sponsoring 10 girls and 2 chaperones to fly from the small island of Tanna (where the active volcano is) to participate in this year’s relay. You have to understand that these girls would NEVER have the opportunity to leave their island, let alone go in a plane to their country’s capital city, stay in a hotel, eat in ‘restaurants’ and participate in their country’s biggest Independence Day event – the Round Island Relay. It is hard for me to really explain to you how out of their ‘normal world’ this is. If I said we would probably go to the moon before they would usually get this opportunity, I would not be exaggerating!!

So I am hoping you would be able to help us raise enough money to give these girls the chance of a lifetime. You have all been so generous in years gone by, and this year we have lots of different ways you can help. Remember, every single $ goes to the girls – I do not take any money for time or effort or admin, so you can be assured that 100% of your help is going to those in need. Any extra $$ we raise will be put towards school supplies for the little underprivileged school on the main island that we have always helped.

Here is a summary of ways you could choose to help us (more details on each below).

  1. Make a direct donation (see details at right)
  2. Donate school supplies
  3. Buy Raffle Tickets – 3 great prizes
  4. Purchase a pair of gorgeous hand-made earrings
  5. Purchase a piece of Maggie Hart original artwork
  6. Help us get some PR
  7. Make a bid on the ‘Train the Trainer’ Auction

2. Donate school supplies

We have always helped a little school called Epau Primary School each time we have visited. We take them literacy and numeracy resources, as well as pre-loved books. You could help us give these kiddies some help with their education by donating any of the following items:

  • 60 x Enviro Shopping bags
  • 180 x Paperback Reading Books suitable for children aged 3 – 10yrs
  • Pens and pencils
  • Coloured pencils and crayons (no texta’s – these dry out)
  • Colouring-in books suitable for children aged 3 – 10yrs
  • Rulers, sharpeners, erasers, safety scissors, glue etc
  • Calculators
  • Any other literacy or numeracy resources

3. Buy Raffle Tickets

With support from local businesses that have generously donated their time and money to helping us raise money for the Vanuatu kiddies, we have been able to put together a wonderful raffle.

1st Prize –– one big floral display or 4-5 smaller ones of your taste from Sunda Florist - valued at $200
2nd Prize – 20% off all salon services for 2mths at Peter Berliner Hairdressing, PLUS $40 worth of retail products – valued at over $100
3rd Prize – a framed art piece from Maggie Hart – valued at $95

Cost of tickets for this terrific prize pool is $10 for 1 ticket, $25 for 3.

4. Purchase a pair of gorgeous hand-made earrings

Nikki Beaumont joined our Jump Start Vanuatu Relay team in 2006, so was able to see first hand how all the fundraising efforts could directly be handed over to the children. She has generously given her time to design and make by hand her beautiful earrings that you have seen for the last month in the Jump Start office. At only $10 a pair, Nikki is taking no money for her time, just to cover the cost of the beautiful beads, and then all profits ($5 a pair) go to our fund-raising efforts.

5. Purchase a Painting

Maggie Hart has donated some of her special original framed pieces for your purchase with all profits going to the kiddies.

6.  Help us get some PR

We would love to get some help in gaining some PR for this worthwhile project, which will hopefully allow us to raise even more money. Despite efforts over the years, I have not been able to secure this, so if you know any journalist and/or editor and/or anyone in the media who could help us out, I would love it if you could have a chat with them about this generous, worthwhile initiative we are doing, and to give them my contact details.

7. Make a bid on the 'Train the Trainer' Auction - We successfully raised $2475 on this day. Visit http://www.gregorerdmann.com/photography/Photo_Blog/Entries/2008/6/21_JumpStart_Fundraiser.html  to see the Jump Start trainers getting worked out by their clients!

Auction and Fundraising Event
Bidding Starts: Tuesday 3 June 2008
Actual Training Day: Saturday 21 June 2008
Time: Training session is 3-3.30pm, then stay around for a picnic, massage and games
Where: Brightmore Children’s Playground, Neutral Bay.

You’ve probably wondered what it would be like to have the shoe on the other foot, and put your trainer through the paces while you stand back and instruct!  Well, now here’s your chance!!!  We have enabled an opportunity for you to materialize this malicious, irrational pondering thought of revenge by actually putting it into action, and training your trainer for a half hour session!!!

To make this unique event competitive, we will be holding an auction for the highest bidders to be rewarded with this chance to train their chosen trainers, with ALL winning bid proceeds to go to the fundraising efforts for the Vanuatu kiddies.

All bids will commence at $50, and are increased in $25 lots.  On the Jump Start noticeboard, there will be a poster listing the trainers and the current client bids, so you have the opportunity whenever you wish to write your name and higher bid onto the sheet for this once in a lifetime half hour! Feel free to call or email with your bids as well.

Train the Trainer Profiles:

Bec – Due to injuries, Bec has been lucky enough to escape this tortuous ordeal by being designated the important role of adjudicator to moderate the sessions between client and trainer, and ensure that you don’t get too carried away with your paybacks.

Deb – Don’t bestow pity upon Deb’s challenging months gone by, as you know this is no excuse for not redeeming some of the many moments of client regurgitation that Deborah has inflicted upon unwitting clients. Fun and laughter are sure to set in as you train Deb under your fierce instruction!  Chant “Burpees my Butt Deb” as you command her to do a set!!

Diane – Di will not be out-done in reputation as a hard trainer by any of her colleagues, and should be punished for her unrelenting training sessions! Described often as the ‘smiling assassin’, Di is a lover of sweat and squats, so put your money where your mouth is, and fight for this chance.

Graham –Graham may be on his way to becoming Australia’s next Mel Gibson, but you have an opportunity now to make him as buffed as he can be for the big screen. Your half hour session with Graham is worth all the satisfaction you will feel forevermore, so raise your bids and don’t let anyone else take this opportunity from you.

Heidi – let’s face it, this should be your dream goal to mercilessly train Heidi for 30mins. Since the inception of Jump Start, Heidi has proudly maintained the reputation as being the hardest trainer and as such, should incur the hardest treatment from one of you excited clients!  We expect a major bidding war to erupt upon the Jump Start noticeboard, and are even contemplating setting up a hotline to deal with the demand. Heidi’s callous and somewhat disturbing sessions need to be addressed by a bidder willing to represent the entire Jump Start clientele in dishing out commands to ‘the boss’!

Linda – You know you want to! You can feel the intense inclination to lash out at Linda for all the punishing sets and repetitions she inflicts upon you all, and here is your chance to let her know that you have a love-hate relationship with her!! Mwahahahah. Bid now!!

Manuel – This one will take a while to wear out, as there is soooo much muscle to fatigue on this trainer!! Not to be trained by the faint-hearted client, Manuel deserves to feel the pain in his muscles that he makes you feel days after your sessions with him! We want fat-walleted bidders here only!

Meggan – yoga instructors may appear so calm and in control, but could Meggan do a tree stand for the whole 1/2hr??? Make a bid, and push her out of her comfort zone- your satisfaction of this is guaranteed.

Michelle – you may ask, how can I make a Pilates instructor ‘feel the burn’? What about a whole 30mins of 500’s???? Come on Pilates clients, join together and take the point out of her toes – we know your creativity could make her never want to do a side leg raise again!

Nataliya - some call her ‘Boris’ and some call her ‘Nasty Nazi Nataliya’, but whatever you call her, here is your chance to get your hands on this little Ukrainian dynamo. She will be a hard one to wear down, but we know there is someone out there who is dying to take on this challenge!

Phil – Don’t let him go unscathed just because he’s new, as now is your opportunity to make your mark of impression on him by putting him through his paces.  Our spies tell us he especially loathes pushups, squats, and squat jumps!!!  Act now and bid on this newbie so he doesn’t get too out of control!!

Rose – Every rose has its thorn, and Rose has thrust many of these thorns of pain into your glutes, your abs, your thighs, your biceps, rhomboids, and trapezius!!  Undoubtedly you would’ve strained your masseter muscles (your jaw muscles for the anatomically-word challenged) too as you let out your cries of pain as she instructs you to do any of her barbaric exercises!

So there we have it everyone!  Make sure you become a part of this historic once-off event where YOU, the client, can train any of our trainers for half an hour!!!!

Terms and Conditions

  • You are allowed to join forces with others in your group, to be a betting conglomerate.
  • Since all trainers will be trained at the same time, you can only be the winner of one of the trainers!
  • As we do for you, injuries must be taken into account when torturing these poor volunteers.

VANUATU TEAM RELAY & TROPICAL HOLIDAY

Take your place in the JUMP START team for the
2008 'Vanuatu Round Island Relay'.

This event is the highlight of our health and fitness program
and you are invited to join us for this unforgettable experience.

The Challenge
The relay is 140km around the island, divided into 10 sections.
Each team has 10 participants who do one section each.
Sections range from 11.6km to 16km.
Relay day is Saturday 26th July, 2008

In 2001, JUMP START was the first International team ever to participate in this event, and since then we have taken part in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006.  The Round Island Relay (RIR) is part of the Independence Day celebrations for Vanuatu. It signifies the linking of the local people since independence from the UK and France in 1980.

As a team, we stay together all day long to help and encourage and support each other, as we jog (or trot or walk) around the circumference of the island of Efate. So the way it works is, the first runner goes off and the rest of us hop in a mini-bus. We go ahead for a couple of kilometres, then as our runner comes past we cheer them on and give them water, then go ahead another few kilometres until our team mate comes past again. This goes on all day until we finish the relay and everyone has had their turn. Although it is quite competitive for the local teams, we never worry ourselves about trying to keep up with them. It is just so exciting to see them run past, often bare foot, and not even opening their mouths to breath! They are true, natural athletes.

Each of the villages we pass through has spent days preparing their little piece of paradise and making their part of the road beautiful with palm fronds, flowers and even tunnels of floral ‘irrigation’ for the runners to pass through. The Ni-Vanuatu line the roadside or perch themselves in trees calling out, singing, clapping and cheering us on (it makes us feel like we are part of the Olympic Torch Relay!) They set up stalls with local produce and gifts, and all the gorgeous, smiley kiddies are dressed in their Sunday best, ready to ‘high 5’ you as you go past.

One of the best things about the trip is making new friends and feeling part of a team.  Jogging or walking for fitness might be considered a solitary activity, but for many of the team participants in previous years, the experience fundamentally changed their perceptions of their own abilities and opened up a whole new way of keeping fit.  The motivation of your fellow team members and the enduring friendships forged during the time in Vanuatu makes this a unique trip.

The Vanuatu Round Island Relay is life changing. In previous years, some of our team members had never jogged more than 1km before they put their deposit down, and then to go on and complete a section as part of our team is an incredible accomplishment.  So if you are looking to set yourself a fitness goal for 2008, this is the one for you.

BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!  Don’t forget that this trip is not just about the Round Island Relay.  Don’t forget about the fantastic holiday we all have in an absolutely spectacular part of the world where you can do as much or as little as you like in a warm, relaxed, tropical paradise. The Ni-Vanuatu would have to be the warmest and friendliest people you could possibly meet. The resort we stay in (Iririki Island Resort) is the most beautiful on the island, with fabulous views, a tropical paradise atmosphere, an excellent restaurant, luxurious pool area, and delicious Pina Colada's served in coconuts!!! Oh, and did I forget to mention that there is a new family section on the resort island, plus the original (and beautiful) child-free area – which means it is now suitable for everyone!

BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE! Every year, we undertake lots of fund-raising before we leave Australia and arrive in Vanuatu with many hundreds of dollars (and 130kg of excess baggage) worth of numeracy and literacy resources and sporting equipment, which we donate to two schools in the rural area who otherwise have very little.  The delight on the children’s (and teachers’) faces when we unpack these goods is a pleasure that is hard to beat!  And as a thanks back to us, we have been treated to concerts put on by the children, feasts of local produce, hand-made bags woven especially for us, and coconut milk from fresh coconuts supplied for us on relay day!

BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE! In 2004, we also raised enough funds through the generous support of JUMP START clients, together with Northbridge and Pennant Hills Rotary Clubs to sponsor a team from one of the remote islands in the archipelago, called Tanna. We organised for the team of 10 to be flown to their capital city (these children would NEVER have the opportunity to leave their island normally), have 3 night’s food and board, plus participate in their national event. Not only was this a chance of a lifetime for these kids, but they also ended up winning their section of the event, so were able to take lots of dollars back to their island for the others at their school to share. It was a very proud moment for all of us, and their genuine thanks to us for the opportunity was heart-warming. When I went to visit the students in 2006, I asked them if they had been able to use all the resources we had given them. Their reply was, “We felt that we had been given so much by you already, that we distributed it all to other little schools on the island”!!! This year we are sponsoring a team of 10 girls from this school, plus 2 chaperones. They have been training hard and are just sooooooooooo excited about their big trip to their capital city and the opportunity to run in the RIR.

Please have a look at the attached package and let us know if you are interested. If you know anyone who does not come to JUMP START but would be interested in joining us, please forward this onto them. If you would like to read the memories of last years’ participants, please go to http://jumpstartoutdoor.com/getaways_vanuatu.html

There has been an overwhelming expression of interest in being part of this very special cultural and exercise experience this year. If time allows you to come with us, I can guarantee you will have an exceptional holiday as well as feeling completely satisfied at completing such a challenging (but fun) event.

As soon as you decide you are going to prioritise this trip, let me know, as there is another relay team coming form Brisbane who will also be staying at Iririki (which is sure to be lots of fun!). What this means though, is that the garden view bungalows get booked out, but I can reserve them for you if you let me know.

I am sooooooooooooo excited about this years trip. Firstly because it has been 2yrs since going to my favourite place; secondly because of the great bunch of people who have already indicated they will be coming this year; and thirdly because we are sponsoring the group of girls to come over from Tanna to participate in the relay, which I know is so incredibly special for them.

Kylie's testimonial about Mums With Bubs

The Vanuatu RIR 2002 was a fantastic experience.  For me it was a personal goal and achievement to be able to run and participate in a team event.  As I now say to my friends and family, I am an “International Race Participant”. Kylie's testimonial about Mums With BubsOnce the race was over there was definitely a new bond with all the participants.  We all experienced a unique team event, one that we will all be able remember and reminisce, right up until I do it again next year!

Sarah's testimonial about Mums With Bubs

I never would have thought I could have run as long as I did (even with my spassy feet!!!!!), or even competing in a “international run”.  This really has been a HUGE personal achievement and journey. I now feel like I have more confidence just being me and knowing what I can achieve. When I have a challenging day at work (which I have many in my profession), I think about the holiday and everything slips back into perspective.Sarah's testimonial about Mums With Bubs
